Better broadband will help contractors

Contractors and freelancers working from remote locations need better broadband access. That’s the advice from one expert. Madeline Bennett, editor at V3.co.uk says “It is important to find some funding in the long-term for rural access, but I’d say only if there is a genuine business case for it”. Ms Bennett also recommended urban areas have comprehensive coverage for all web users. Poor broadband access can have a detrimental effect on the business of freelancers and contractors working from home. One village in Rutland, however, has taken matters into its own hands this week. Having seen the big telecoms companies refuse to provide a fibre optic connection, the people of the village of Lyddington have joined together to build their own cable network. If you want advice on using broadband to enhance your business, the team at Excellium Umbrella is happy to help.

B4RN Launch Event Presentation (with CEO Barry Forde)

Full presentation by Professor Barry Forde: Broadband for the Rural North (B4RN) launch event Lancaster, 15th December 2011. B4RN is non-profit grass routes ‘Fibre to the Home’ (FTTH) service for the rural community north of Lancaster in the UK. Providing affordable, futureproof, upgradable 1000 Mbit/sec (1Gbit/s) fibre-optic cable Internet connection; hundreds of times faster than any current broadband available from commercial providers to rural areas. Fast broadband like B4RN is essential to the future of rural areas (which by definition lack shops, hospitals, colleges, banks etc). Super-fast Broadband explained in 60 seconds

Super-fast broadband. You’ve heard about it, seen the adverts for it, but what is it and how will it affect you? In this video, in sixty seconds or less, you will learn what you need to know about superfast broadband. In the UK, the average speed of broadband is around three point six mega bytes. Super-fast broadband refers to broadband connections of twenty mega bits and above. It uses optic fibre cables, made up of glass and plastic, which allows data to move much faster along them than the copper pipes used by the broadband that you may have now. The roll-out of this service is well underway, and should reach two-thirds of UK homes and businesses by twenty fifteen. The roll out is a mixture of technologies. Fibre to the Cabinet which then uses conventional copper-based broadband to your home or business. This will be providing speeds of up to forty Mega bits per second download and ten mega bit for upload. Also Fibre to the Premises, which links fibre straight to the home or business providing download speeds of up to one hundred Mega bits and upload speeds of up to thirty Mega bits per second. The additional speed of Super-fast Broadband and the stable environment it provides mean that you can now run concurrently many more applications at home or at work over one single line without any impact on the users’ broadband experience. This is the first in a series “Technology in 60 seconds” a new series of videos, designed to help you understand, in only one minute or less

Core network traffic continues to grow unabated at or near Moores law, a doubling of traffic every year. Broadband access and services continue to drive telecoms and are a critical part of the economic engine despite the difficult global environment. For service providers there is a delicate balance between driving more cost reduction while planning for cost effective increase in capacity into the future, avoiding frequent network renewal. Mr. Morin will discuss the variances in global operator trends and provide an outlook on the innovations that are necessary for economic scaling of optical networks.
