In huge news today Google has declared that they will be starting their own ISP in select locations of the USA that will be fiber and will run at speeds of 1Gbps.Their goal is to try to force other major American ISP’s to upgrade their services and also to see what users will do with such insane speeds. Google also plans on starting some ultra high bandwidth services for these 1Gbps users to try to see how well they will work and how users will take to it. Google also plans on allowing other companies to join in on their fiber network so that other ISP’s can compete using the same fiber. This is the VOA Special English Economics Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http In August, Verizon and Google proposed a plan they say could keep the Internet open while supporting investment in high-speed Internet service.Verizon has the nation’s biggest wireless network while Google is the biggest Internet search engine. The proposal was a surprise because the two companies have been on opposite sides of the debate over net neutrality. That is the idea that all content on the Web should be treated equally. Internet service providers want to be able to charge more for heavy Internet traffic or users who want special services. The Federal Communications Commission regulates telephone, cable and satellite communications. But its power to regulate Internet service has been questioned in the courts. The new proposal calls for rules barring service providers from preventing users from sending and receiving legal information of any kind. Users also could not be prevented from linking any application, service or device they choose to the Web.And broadband Internet providers would be barred from discriminating against content and would have to be open about their policies. Supporters of net neutrality criticized the proposal for not including wireless providers. Wireless broadband is among the fastest growing parts of the Internet.Others oppose the creation of a “two-tiered” system on the Internet in which some content gets a fast lane and other content goes slowly. Hot on the heels of Google’s launch of its social network Buzz comes the news that it will be offering super-fast broadband to thousands of US homes. It plans to trial-build several fibre-optic networks offering speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second thats up to 100 times faster than the current average speed in residential US. Its thought so-called killer apps would take advantage of the speeds but so far Google is keeping them under wraps. Theres no news as yet whether such fast speeds will be rolled out here but if the trials are a success then Google may expand the scheme to other countries, including the UK. Video Rating: 5 / 5
twitter.com – facebook.com – The other night, I decided it would be fun to take live questions from the chat room and email. One of the questions was sent in by Eddie, who happens to be a co-developer of the WicketPixie WordPress theme. He wondered whether Google Fiber will whip the cable companies into shape… or if said companies are too stubborn to fall into line. chris.pirillo.com Video Rating: 4 / 5
