Google Fiber is a project to build an experimental broadband internet network infrastructure using fiber-optic communication in Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri, following a selection process. Over 1100 communities applied to be the first recipient of the technology. Google announced on March 30, 2011 that Kansas City, Kansas will be the first community where the experimental network would be deployed. On May 17, 2011, Google announced that the service would be expanded to include the Kansas City, Missouri metro area. The service is expected to be functional in early 2012. Google is installing ultra-high speed fibre optic internet service in Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri. Will it usher in a new era in industry and society, or just bring quicker web browsing and media downloads? The service will offer download speeds up to 100 times faster than those available to the average American household. People living and working in Kansas City, Missouri react to their city’s role as an internet testing ground.

With four times more data, West Africa Cable System, or WACS, boosts bandwidth for the world’s least-connected region. Work has begun to lay undersea communications cable along the coast of West Africa. The cable is set to give more Africans a fast Internet access for the first time. The West Africa Cable System, known by its acronyms (WACS), runs 14000 kilometres from London to South Africa. It is expected to land in at least 12 countries along the way. Namibia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Congo and Togo have not had direct access to a submarine communications cable before. Only about 10 per cent of Africans are web users, compared to 65 per cent of Europeans. The continent’s fibre optic connections have improved immensely in the past few years. But low bandwidth and short-sighted regulation meant Africa still lagged way behind in the Internet revolution across the developed world. WACS carries well over four times more information than any other African data pipeline. In the modern, wired-up world, getting online makes a real difference to social and economic development. The new system will boost the bandwidth of the world’s least-connected region. Al Jazeera’s Rory Challands reports. Video Rating: 5 / 5

Ok you have seen how great FIOS looks like and all it can do on your tv besides just watching tv. Now let me show you how fast the internet is I have 35/20 mbps down/up and that’s exactly what I get everytime at anytime being in the morning or late afternoon rush hour with kids home or neighbors coming home from work jumping on the internet. Since FIOS is completly fiber-optic from Verizon’s central office straight to the side of my house their is no saturation on my line since it’s mine and not being shared with the whole neighborhood. Thus allowing me to have unlimited bandwith for my picture on my tv fastest internet speeds. Plus no lag while playing mw2 :) as you can see if I’m not getting 35/20 that’s probably because I’m getting more. On the other hand IO/cablevision says they get 15/2 mbps but in reality it’s probably around 7/1 at best let’s say 10/1, and let’s be honest verizon wireless when they rollout 4G they will probably match that speed ON THEIR CELLPHONES!!!! If you upgrade to IO Boost which is supposedly 30/15 its probably going to be 20/10 at best which means I’m beating that number almost twice in download and quadrupled in upload and I don’t pay extra for those speeds unlike IO Boost. So there you have it another example of why FIOS is better than cable. Share your thoughts. ps it’s now 8-12-2010 and decided to check out the speed i got which is the fastest i’ve experienced yet www.speedtest.net Video Rating: 5 / 5

I’m Alex Villarreal with the VOA Special English Technology Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http In January, a five-day Internet shutdown in Egypt failed to stop the protests that forced President Hosni Mubarak to resign. But it raised a technical question. Just how were Egyptian officials able to shut down Internet service in their country?Craig Labovitz is chief scientist at Arbor Networks, an Internet security company in the American state of Michigan. Mr. Labovitz says the Internet is not as indestructible as people might think. He says there are points where the flow of computer traffic can be restricted. Mr. Labovitz says his researchers tracked the Internet shutdown in Egypt as it was being carried out. He explains that in Egypt, Internet users connect to the outside world through a small number of providers with international links. He said there are a hundred or more providers within the country — domestic providers. But there really are only four providers that have links to the external world. And there are an even smaller number of data centers where the fiber optics cross Egypt. So only a handful of machines need to be shut down to have this kind of disruption.News reports suggested that the fiber optic links for those networks are all housed in the same building. Could a similar Internet shutdown take place in the United States? Craig Labovitz says that is less of a possibility because of a larger number of Internet providers and data centers. Still … Video Rating: 5 / 5
This is the VOA Special English Economics Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http In August, Verizon and Google proposed a plan they say could keep the Internet open while supporting investment in high-speed Internet service.Verizon has the nation’s biggest wireless network while Google is the biggest Internet search engine. The proposal was a surprise because the two companies have been on opposite sides of the debate over net neutrality. That is the idea that all content on the Web should be treated equally. Internet service providers want to be able to charge more for heavy Internet traffic or users who want special services. The Federal Communications Commission regulates telephone, cable and satellite communications. But its power to regulate Internet service has been questioned in the courts. The new proposal calls for rules barring service providers from preventing users from sending and receiving legal information of any kind. Users also could not be prevented from linking any application, service or device they choose to the Web.And broadband Internet providers would be barred from discriminating against content and would have to be open about their policies. Supporters of net neutrality criticized the proposal for not including wireless providers. Wireless broadband is among the fastest growing parts of the Internet.Others oppose the creation of a “two-tiered” system on the Internet in which some content gets a fast lane and other content goes slowly. But … Video Rating: 5 / 5
