This is Lecture 19 in the FOA series on fiber optics. In this lecture, we cover ODTR measurement uncertainty – why it sometimes gives you information that needs understanding and interpretation. You should also see Lectures 17 and 18 on the basics of OTDRs and how to set them up for measurements properly. Video Rating: 5 / 5
This is Lecture 17 in the FOA series on fiber optics. This lecture is on OTDRS – optical time domain reflectometers. OTDRs are very powerful test tools for fiber optics but are complex and require more analysis of the test information than most instruments. This lecture, the first of 3 on OTDRs, covers the basics of how OTDRs work.
Fiber optic safety is important on the job and in the classroom. This is an overview of how to recognize the potential dangers of working with fiber and how to avoid problems. Video Rating: 5 / 5
This is the 11th lecture in the FOA series on fiber optics. This 3rd lecture on fiber optic network design covers choosing components appropriate for the installation. It discusses fiber, cable, connectors, splices and hardware and the criteria that should be used to chose the proper components for a specific design project. Video Rating: 0 / 5
This is the 9th lecture in the FOA series on fiber optics. This lecture introduces the process of designing a fiber optic network and talks about what is involved in designing a fiber optic network. The next two will cover planning the network and choosing components appropriate for the installation. Video Rating: 5 / 5
This is Lecture 23 in the FOA series of lectures on fiber optics. In this lecture, we talk about “refraction” and “total internal reflection,” the optical terms for how light is bent or reflected at the boundary of two different materials. Total internal reflection is important in fiber optics as it is the reason that light can be trapped in the core of the fiber, making optical fiber transmission possible. Using a visible red laser from a VFL, we demonstrate total internal reflection in a large core plastic fiber. Video Rating: 5 / 5
This is the seventh lecture in the FOA series on fiber optics, covering connectors. In this lecture we discuss the requirements for good connector performance, the types of connectors and the various ways that have been developed to install them.
This is Lecture 21 in the FOA series of lectures on fiber optics. In this video, we will review the use of visual fault locators and demonstrate how they show stress loss in a typical patchcord.
This is Lecture 13 in the FOA series on fiber optics. This lecture looks at ways to test fiber visually, tracing fibers, finding faults or areas of high loss, using microscopes to inspect connectors and interferometers to inspect singlemode connectors. We also show how to “see” the infrared light in fiber optic systems using a digital camera. Video Rating: 0 / 5
This is Lecture 14 in the FOA series on fiber optics. This lecture covers optical power, the most fundamental measurement in fiber optics, the instrument used to measure power, the unit of measurement (dB) and how it is calibrated.
