In huge news today Google has declared that they will be starting their own ISP in select locations of the USA that will be fiber and will run at speeds of 1Gbps.Their goal is to try to force other major American ISP’s to upgrade their services and also to see what users will do with such insane speeds. Google also plans on starting some ultra high bandwidth services for these 1Gbps users to try to see how well they will work and how users will take to it. Google also plans on allowing other companies to join in on their fiber network so that other ISP’s can compete using the same fiber. TT Basic Package Fibre Optic

FiOS installation in Green Tree Pittsburgh 10-29-09. My house was the first in the neighborhood to get the service, 15/25 megabits. I saw the trucks throughout the summer, and kept checking the site, and finally it was available, so I ordered right away, an upgrade from DSL. The install went well, my Fios guy was pro, I’m pleased and all of that good stuff. The optical network terminal that the installer put in was one of the new kind that’s all one piece, with fiber in, backup battery, and the home networking all in one box. Yes that’s right, the fiber comes directly into the house with this and right to the box, no outside box with power lines going back out to it. The only external part is the router. It has to be easier to install one of these, and all of the electronics are protected on the inside basement wall. Did a speed test, and sure, it’s fast. That’s the last part of the video. Now we’re ready for all of the bigger files, torrents and all of that. In fact, this video just took a couple of minutes to upload, and that would have been a half hour before.

Speed test for RCN High Speed Internet here in Pen Argyl, PA. I went from basic DSL through Frontier to this. With DSL my download speed WAS 3.15 mbps & an upload speed of 768 kbps….now it’s faster :) (I also have a pretty fast Acer computer as well, so lotsa speed across the board) You can see the difference between the two from this link www.youtube.com UPDATE: I have had RCN fiber optic high speed internet now for a few months & so far so good. I have never lost connection-no service disruptions, no slow downloads or uploads, no lagging, works great during peak internet times, etc. The actual speed may go up & down but at it’s lowest speed it’s still lightning fast & still much faster than Frontier’s broadband. RCN’s fiber optic internet does NOT use your phone line so you don’t have to have a landline phone for this. It is hooked up to the side of your house just like basic cable tv is hooked up. You can use fiber optic internet during thunderstorms as glass fiber optic strands do not attract lightning. For the price of .99/mo. you can’t beat this really-& no I don’t work for RCN I’m just a housewife! I am a basic internet user – e-mail, Facebook, gaming, music downloading, video & picture uploading, I’m also on youtube quite alot watching videos & no buffering ever. I have only 1 computer in my house, if you have more than 1 you might want to get the higher package w/ higher mbps speed, but it still rocks!
